Why, in 1919, did Frenchman Curtis Tamm hike seven miles up a mountain to plant vines under some of the most adverse growing conditions in California?" Chalone may be the oldest winery on Monterey County producing Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc from plantings put in the ground in 1919. Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc were added to the vineyard in 1946. Subsequent plantings of Chardonnay during the 70s and 80s increased the vineyard to 107 acres of which 67% is now Chardonnay grapes.
